No matter how much one tries to gain mastery over life, its tides are indomitable. This realisation dawns upon Ishan, a sadhu, who despite having renounced the world at a very early age finds himself swept back to the shores of Bombay, a city of illusions and material dreams. As he finds himself thrust into the throes of its bustle, he struggles to find his footing between who he is and what he must do to survive.
The churn of emotions and circumstances forces him to confront two personal losses: one which made him abandon the world fifteen years ago, and another that triggered his reluctant return. Conflicted and uncertain of where he truly belongs, he constantly finds himself an Aagantuk, a person who arrives, not by his own volition, but because he suddenly finds himself displaced by the crosscurrents of life. Originally published in Gujarati by the very acclaimed Dhiruben Patel, Aagantuk went on to win the hearts of the Gujarati literary community and the 2002 Sahitya Akademi Award. The story is now part of mandatory reading in the literature syllabus of eight universities.
The book has been previously translated in two other regional languages and has also been adapted for television by Door Darshan. This book has remained one of Dhiruben’s most intimate and cherished works which she continued to reflect on for the rest of her life, so much so that at the ripe age of 96 she decided that she wanted to add six more chapters to Ishan’s journey.
